Another goal record added to Erling Haaland’s huge CV had Pep Guardiola sounding – tongue-in-cheek – as if he was growing tired of answering questions about his prolific scorer on Tuesday.
With his shot in the 54th minute that spurred City’s 3-2 comeback victory over RB Leipzig, the 23-year-old became the fastest to score 40 Champions League goals, clinching them top spot in Group G with a round of group games remaining.
In a 1-1 tie with Liverpool three days earlier, Haaland became the fastest player in Premier League history to reach 50 goals.
“Again? “Do I have to tell you this again?” When asked about his thoughts, Guardiola laughed. “I’m impressed a thousand million times over. They triumphed today. Another milestone. Congratulations. He’s an outstanding player. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: we’re overjoyed.
“We love him, not just for the goals he scores, but for many many other things.”
Haaland broke Ruud van Nistelrooy’s 45-game record by scoring 40 goals in 35 games.
But, more crucially for Guardiola, it sparked City’s comeback after a dismal first half left them trailing by two goals for the first time in a Champions League game since 2018.
Guardiola expressed hope that his players would benefit from the roller-coaster game.
“To win in that game not comfortably, to realise, to put in front of the mirror and say ‘We have to do better,'” he went on to explain.
“But February (the round of 16) we’ll be there top of the group, I don’t know who we’re going to face but the second leg will be (at home), and we showed again that we are able to make a comeback.”
